Accounts Assistant

Mary Lander

Mary Lander is an Accounts Assistant for Harland Accountants and works in our Helston office.

Mary is a Cornwall-grown accounts assistant who takes real pride in getting the foundations right. She knows that accurate, consistent and up-to-date records are what give business owners clarity and confidence.

Mary began her accountancy career in 2020, training on the job with a local chartered accountant and building hands-on experience with cloud-based accounting software. At Harland, she supports clients with bookkeeping, VAT returns and payroll, as well as supporting the wider team with accounts preparation and administration. She’s currently completing the final year of her Open University degree and plans to continue developing her skills as she grows her career in accountancy.

Outside of work, Mary is often found working towards her next karate belt, walking Cornwall’s beaches with her husband and grown-up children, or unwinding with a good book, dark chocolate and a glass of red wine. She also enjoys crocheting and knitting handmade gifts, and playing card games with friends.

Get to know Mary a little better …

Are you a spender or a saver?
Spender, much to my husband’s frustrations. He tries to encourage me to save for the future but there is always temptation round the corner.

How do you like to relax?
A walk on the beach, dipping my toes no matter the time of year. Reading a good book, curled up next to my husband on the sofa with a glass of red wine. Creating beautiful things with yarn and a hook or needles, or thread and fabric.

If money and time was no object, what would you be doing right now?
Travelling with my family and good friends, taking in the local culture and making lots of memories.

Who do you follow on social media?
Lots of healthy eating gurus like the Zoe study and Dr Hazel Wallace as well as many artists, local small businesses and chronic health condition advocates.

Who is someone you admire or respect?
My husband and children – no matter what life and health throw at them they push through and achieve their dreams.

And finally … how can a client butter-you-up?
A good chat over a coffee, and maybe some dark chocolate
