Cabilla: A Leading Model for Balancing Sustainable Business Practices with Creative Innovation

Cabilla: A Leading Model for Balancing Sustainable Business Practices

Nestled in the wild beauty of Bodmin Moor, Cabilla is more than just a stunning retreat. It’s a place where the rugged Cornish landscape meets thoughtful hospitality, stunning design, sustainable business practices, and an ethos of supporting local communities. In June, Director Deborah Edwards was delighted to be invited by Creative UK to their Cornish business showcase event that brought together pioneering businesses to celebrate their achievements under the Creative UK program. Cabilla was the perfect backdrop to explore how natural beauty, environmental stewardship, creativity and the strive for unapologetic commercial gain can coexist harmoniously.

Bodmin Moor: A Landscape of Contrasts

Bodmin Moor is often portrayed as bleak and desolate, a landscape that has inspired many authors to convey Cornwall’s darker side. Yet, within this stark beauty lies a richness and a deep connection to nature that Cabilla embodies. The moor is home to a rare temperate rainforest, a precious ecosystem that thrives in this remote corner of Cornwall. This rainforest is special not just for its biodiversity but also for the role it plays in the local environment, helping to regulate the water cycle and providing a habitat for a wide variety of species.

Sustainable Business Practices at Cabilla

Cabilla’s commitment to sustainability and balancing profit and purpose is evident in every aspect of its operation. Staying in one of their Koyts—wooden cabins inspired by ancient Cornish Quoits— and maybe even taking part in wild swimming offers a unique and eco-friendly hospitality experience by connecting with nature while minimising environmental impact. These cabins are not supplied by mains electricity or water, encouraging guests to truly disconnect and embrace the wild surroundings. Each Koyt contains a piece of Cornish quartz, believed to hold properties that ignite clarity and optimism.

Supporting Local Communities and Businesses

Cabilla’s dedication to the local economy was clear by its support of small businesses. Each Koyt is equipped with a cozy Atlantic Blanket, a product of a local company that shares Cabilla’s values of quality and sustainability. Additionally, guests are encouraged to use local toiletries provided by Cabilla (leaving our own behind at home), reducing waste and controlling the environmental impact of products entering the water system. Our evening feast was lovingly prepared by Naughty Nonnas—a local caterer known for its delicious, home-cooked & plentiful feasts. By sourcing from local producers as well as it’s own produce, Cabilla not only supports the community but also ensures that their guests enjoy the best of what Cornwall has to offer.

Balancing Profit and Purpose

One of the misconceptions that many business owners face is the idea that doing good requires operating as a Community Interest Company (CIC) or a non-profit. Cabilla, as a private company, challenges this notion by demonstrating that it’s possible to run a profitable, creative business successfully while making a positive impact. Profit and purpose are not mutually exclusive; they can, and should, thrive together. This belief is reflected in Cabilla’s business practices, which focus on sustainability, community support, and creating meaningful experiences for their guests.
