We are delighted to announce that we have achieved the Healthy Cornwall award in recognition of our commitment as an employer to creating and maintaining a healthy workplace. One of our core missions as a company is to be a fantastic place to work, so it’s very rewarding to have our efforts recognised in creating a happy and healthy workplace that supports our team’s physical and mental wellbeing.
What is the Healthy Cornwall Award?
The Healthy Cornwall Award, organised by the Public Health and Wellbeing Service of Cornwall Council, honours businesses and individuals dedicated to improving health and well-being across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. This award celebrates organisations that place employee well-being on par with traditional business objectives like profitability.
The award recognises exceptional contributions to promoting healthier lifestyles, reducing health inequalities, and fostering a culture of well-being within communities, workplaces, and schools. For us, prioritising a health-focused workplace where our team feels supported—both physically and mentally—is incredibly important. We believe that a happy, healthy workforce is a more productive and engaged one, and we genuinely care about the well-being of our team and want everyone to enjoy coming to work. With that in mind it is very rewarding to receive this accreditation that we have created a healthy environment for our team to work in.
Over the past six months, members of the Healthy Cornwall initiative have been working closely with us, monitoring our progress against a comprehensive set of workplace wellness criteria. This partnership has helped us strengthen our commitment to employee well-being and work towards an even more supportive and health-conscious environment for our team.
By embracing this initiative, we aim to set an example for other businesses in Cornwall, proving that a focus on employee wellbeing not only the individual, but also the success and sustainability of the organisation as a whole.
Harland’s Workplace Health Initiatives
Some of the workplace health initiatives we have been working on over the last six months to achieve the Healthy Cornwall award and create a health-focused workplace include:
- Mental health first aid training course – every business should have both a physical and mental first aider(s) on hand to help best support team members. We already complete physical first aid training, and earlier this year two members of the team completed a training course focused on first aid for mental health.
- Spreading awareness for Mental Health Awareness week – we shared resources and information with our team in relation to national mental health campaigns such as NHS ‘Every Mind Matters’ and resources from Healthy Cornwall’s website
- Weekly check-ins – in our weekly meetings we make sure to check in with every member of the team, ask how they are feeling and if they need support with anything.
- Take ten – we make it clear to our team that if anyone is feeling a bit stressed or overwhelmed they are welcome to get out for a quick walk or breath of fresh air at any point during the day to clear their head.
- We took part in ‘Healthy Eating Week’ – organised by the British Nutrition Foundation, this is a health initiative designed to show us how making small, manageable changes around our daily eating habits can result in a healthier and more sustainable life.
- We completed Cornwall Council’s free NHS health assessments – an NHS health practitioner visited our St Austell and Falmouth offices and carried out BMI and blood pressure checks, plus carried out a lifestyle screening assessment to discover our eating, drinking and exercise habits.
Building a Healthy Future
We are very proud to have achieved the Healthy Cornwall award and will continue to prioritise employee health and wellbeing in the future to maintain this award annually. We’re excited to work on new initiatives to continue making Harlands a healthy, happy place to work.
