Accounts Assistant
Craig Allen

Craig is a bit of a dark horse when it comes to his experience – having joined Harland in 2021, he also has over 20 years experience in hospitality and business management. Not only has Craig run his own business, managed pubs, clubs and restaurants, AND worked for major national hospitality chains, Craig originally trained to be a Financial Advisor after studying Accounting and Finance at university. His wealth of practical experience means he is well placed to support clients in their day-to-day financial operations, and understands the trials and pitfall that business owners face.
“To be a successful business owner you have to wear many hats – marketing, HR, finance, these are all now your responsibility and it can take up a lot of time. If you don’t have a lot of time, my advice is to always keep on-top of your bookkeeping by using the app, Hubdoc. For example, you next time you go to get petrol just open the Hubdoc app and take a photo of the receipt there and then (you can even bin the receipt afterwards). Do this as you go along and it will take 1 second out of your day. But leave it to the end of the month and it will take 3-4 hours! Trust me, Hubdoc will change your life!”
Craig is now a busy dad to 2 young children, and in his spare time enjoys family outings to Lappa Valley steam train park, watching a film (although no more Frozen, please!), and visiting different Cornish pubs and restaurants. Craig is on the committee for the Cornwall branch of the CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale), and is also an avid reader, particularly enjoying books about business or autobiographies about successful CEO’s.

Are you a spender or a saver?
Both. I don’t hoard money away but if I want something I’ll definitely save up, especially as I usually want the top-of-the-line item. I don’t really believe in saving for a rainy day, but that might change now I have a young family!
How do you like to relax?
Going to a new bar or restaurant and seeing how they do things, watching films, and reading about successful CEO’s.
If money and time was no object, what would you be doing right now?
I would be running my own pub – I love the social side and the creativity. People don’t realise the level of detail that goes into making a cracking cocktail.
Who do you follow on social media?
Steven Bartlett from Dragons Den has a brilliant podcast called. ‘Diary of a CEO’. I’m a big fan. I also follow a lot of accountancy and bartending accounts.
Who is someone you admire or respect?
Bill Gates – it’s fascinating how he dropped out of school but then became the richest man in the world, and is now all about philanthropy.
And finally … how can a client butter-you-up
Quite easy … Cake!
